Patchwork bags like this tend to all get labelled as komebukuro ( 'rice bag' for taking rice or bean offerings to temples) but sometimes they were just handy kinchaku (drawstring bags). I'm not 100% sure with this one. It is hand stitched from sturdy cotton pieces that would have originally been for work clothes or household textiles. The brown fabric is a niko-niko kasuri a machine woven kasuri (ikat) that was popular for children's clothing around the 1930s. The lining is plain rather shabby cotton. The cord and string loops around the top look original. It is 24cm high and the base is approx 15cm x 15cm. Mid 20th century
